Arrowe Park

Description

The early history of Arrowe Park estate (1800's) is entwined with the Shaw family. In 1926 the estate was purchased by Birkenhead Corporation on the understanding that it was to be used for the people of the borough. In 1929 the first World Scout Jamboree was held at Arrowe Park, which was a great success despite the rain!

The golf course officially opened on 30th July 1931, the first golf ball hit still on display in the clubhouse. The course was used for tank training during the war but they were not responsible for the unusual ‘corrugations’ on parts of the golf course. They emanate from Ralph Shaw’s tree planting, thousands of seedlings being ‘grown on’ while the shallow trenches were drainage channels to save the roots from excess water.

Qualifying for the 1947 Open was held at Arrowe and Royal Liverpool GC. This was the first Open in which Peter Alliss played, along with his father Percy.

Arrowe Park remains a popular course renowned for its June Open.
