Title

Bromborough

Description

In 1903 a club was formed on a 9 hole course built by the Hassall family when the land was sold to William Hesketh Lever, the first Viscount Leverhulme. Interest in golf continued through three successive Viscounts until the death of the last holder of the title in 2000. Philip William Lever was Captain in 1949 and generously donated two acres of land to the club on which to build a new Clubhouse.

Golf was suspended during the WW1 when the clubhouse became a military hospital after which the course expanded to 18 holes and the clubhouse extended and improved. Once again war intervened in 1939 when the course was used by US forces.

Britain’s first motorways were built in 1955 when courses were prime targets for new routes. In the late 1960’s four holes were lost to the M53 but the Club was compensated with new land and holes designed by Hawtree & Son re-opening in its present form in 1972.
