Astbury

Description

Situated just outside the village of Astbury near Congleton, this scenic parkland course is played on both sides of the Macclesfield canal, with eight testing holes on the ‘clubhouse side’ and ten even more testing holes over the canal.
It all began in 1922 when three young men came across a bag of old golf clubs in the Town Clerk's office in the market town of Congleton, Cheshire.
How the clubs got there remains a mystery, but local folklore does provide a clue.
There are no records for confirmation but it is believed a golf club had been formed in the town and played across some local fields, before it was disbanded in the early part of the First World War. It originally was formed of 13 holes. The trio clearly enjoyed thrashing balls around the same stretch of land, and they decided to form a new club, Astbury Golf Club, named after the nearby village.
In 1962 the late Sir Bernard Lovell was given honorary life membership, and club officials were given a personal guided tour of Jodrell Bank.
More recently, our new Ryder Cup star, Tommy Fleetwood, can often be found practicing at the club, as he lives quite close by.
