Title

Bidston G.C.

Description

Founded in 1913 as a 9 hole course it was extended to 15 holes and then 18 holes by 1925.
The course, bounded by the rivers Fender and Birkett and the Liverpool to West Kirby railway, is part links and since extensive tree planting firstly in 1970 and by the Forestry commission in 1999 part parkland.
During the 2nd. world war 15 acres were given over to farming and a part was set aside with oil fired beacons to act as decoys for German bombers trying to locate Liverpool docks and local shipbuilding.
In 1969/70 the construction of the M53 motorway took 20 acres including 3 holes off the course with the internal layout revised to accommodate 3 new holes.
The purchase of the freehold of the land was completed in 1996.
The signature hole of the course is the 156yd. 16th requiring an accurate tee shot to clear a loop in the river. This hole is named “Shady Nook” from when the singer Donald Peers used to appear at local theatres and regularly played the course, he also presented a Trophy to the club.
In 1955 Ernie Crimes, a scratch member, won the Cheshire Match Play championship at Wallasey golf club.
