Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire played against Cumberland & Westmorland, Northumberland and Durham. This was at the behest of the newly formed EGU who felt it would assist their team selection process.
The Northern Counties is, somewhat belatedly, officially formed. Despite the optimism in the report on the formation of a formal league, this did not materialise until 1984!
Inter-county golf is formalised with the formation of the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League. It comprises Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland
